In a recent survey, it was determined that only 32% of ACPD officers live in Albemarle County, due in large part to the high housing costs in the County. By financially assisting our officers to make living in the County that they serve more feasible, it will aid in building community relations, allow these officers to become more vested in our County.
Beginning in 2017, the Foundation offered house purchase grants to qualified police officers. Since the inception of this program, the Foundation has given three Home Purchase grants for a total of almost $50,000.00. In 2020, the Foundation raised the possible grant award up to $20,000 toward the purchase of a home in the County. The purchase grants provide down payment assistance and/or help with closing costs.
Rental Assistance Grants
In 2020, ACPF added a rental assistance program. Did you know that the starting pay for an Albemarle County Police Officer is $38,839? Many officers are not yet ready to buy a home, but still want to live in the County. The rental assistance grants are designed to make leasing a home in Albemarle County feasible, particularly for our newer officers. Officers can apply for rental assistance of up to $300.00 per month or a total of $3,600.00 per year.
In addition, the Foundation hopes to partner with area property managers and owners to match the Foundation discounts or provide other discounts to help make living in the county financially reasonable and realistic.
By providing direct economic incentives to our officers, we are encouraging more officers to reside in Albemarle County, encouraging long-term commitment to Albemarle, and increasing recruiting effectiveness for the Albemarle County Police Department. One of the Foundation's priorities is to support programs and events that are designed to create positive interaction between police officers and the community with a focus on educating the public on police practices and the police department learning about the community.
In 2017, the ACPF established the Albemarle County Police Foundation Educational Scholarship Program as a benefit for Albemarle County police officers and staff.
