Charlottesville Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is proud to announce that we have partnered with the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) to be members of our community and gym. Thank you to The Albemarle Police Foundation for making this unique partnership possible. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique and leverage to take the fight to the ground and control the opponent. The ACPD and Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Training Academy currently teach BJJ as a core part of the police academy defensive tactics program and post academy Spartan program.
The goal of this partnership is to allow officers to learn to effectively control resisting individuals using leverage and technique to avoid the need for excessive force. This will result in safer resolutions to physical confrontation for both the officer and suspect. The live training will allow officers to learn to remain calm and controlled when responding to resistance in the course of their duties. In addition to the physical benefits that Jiu-Jitsu brings, regular practice will also help reduce the stress that comes with having a tough job.
At Charlottesville Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we welcome all walks of life through our doors and are all equals on the mat. Jiu-Jitsu is known to grow strong bonds between training partners; we are excited to provide an opportunity for this inaugural class of 15 officers to further develop positive relationships with members of the community that they serve.
Our programs are strategically focused to complement the Albemarle County Police Department’s vision of becoming one of the safest communities in America. We give high priority to programs, such as educational scholarships, housing assistance, and supplemental training and equipment for our officers. We also provide outreach programs that promote relationship-building between the ACPD and our community.
One of the Foundation's priorities is to support programs and events that are designed to create positive interaction between police officers and the community with a focus on educating the public on police practices and the police department learning about the community.
In 2017, the ACPF established the Albemarle County Police Foundation Educational Scholarship Program as a benefit for Albemarle County police officers and staff.
From time to time, the Albemarle County Police Department and its officers, need or want training, equipment, supplies and/or support that is not included in the County Police budget. The Foundation is pleased to supplement what the county budget provides to ensure a professional, highly educated and trained organization, equipped to prevent crime and enhance the overall safety of our community. The Albemarle County Police Foundation is committed to the ideal that a dedicated, well-trained, and modernly-equipped police department leads to a safer community.
Financially assisting our officers to move into the jurisdiction that they serve, will aid in building community relations and they will become more vested in our County.
For many years, Foundation dollars have gone towards purchasing law enforcement dogs, training and feeding them, and making sure they have what they need.
